This
book features Beatrice Prior, the brave and selfless Divergent girl. The book,
the first in an exciting trilogy, is set in a city where factions or small
groups of people whose beliefs are the same, divide people and make some of
them hate the others. After a war referred continually, in the book, as the
"Purity War", the population divided according to what they believed
was the cause of this war. The people who believed that selfishness was the
cause of the war formed Abnegation, the people who believed that ignorance was
the cause of the war formed Erudite, the people who believed that dishonesty
was the cause formed Candor, those who believed that cowardice was the cause
formed Dauntless and those who believed that violence was the cause formed Amity.
The
heroine, Beatrice or later referred to as Tris, is courageous, selfless and
very hard- working. But she is confused. When her aptitude tests end up
inconclusive, she knows not what she is, and how dangerous she is to her
father's enemy, Jeanine Matthews. The Erudite start publishing false articles
about the Abnegation, who are the leaders because they are believed to be
incorruptible. Jeanine seems to want power, and seems to be ready to do
anything to get it. When Tris sees that her brother has some hidden qualities
that she has never seen before, and secrets he has never told her before, she
grieves. She then realizes that she needs to choose. Choose between bravery and
selflessness. "It will require great selflessness to choose Abnegation,
and great courage to choose Dauntless." Are the lines she uses. She ends up brave, and selfish.
Then
she meets Four- smart, brave and very handsome. He is her hard and ruthless
instructor. And he keeps taunting and scolding her. She makes three transfer
friends, Christina, Will, and Al, and some more Dauntless born friends, Uriah,
Marlene, Lynn. But more importantly, she makes some dangerous enemies,
including some other jealous transfers, like Peter, Drew and Molly. By the time
the second stage of her initiation is over, Peter seems to have realized that
Tris is more than she looks. She is a huge threat. He, along with Drew, and her
own best friend, Al, hang her ovr the chasm, to scare her. Four, as always,
comes to Tris's rescue.
By
the time Tris reaches the last stage of initiation, the fear landscape, she
finds out more and more about Four. His real name, the reason behind his
constant refusal of becoming a Dauntless leader, and the reason why he was
Dauntless.
Tris
bravely faces her fears in the last stage of her initiation, and she even
overcomes one of her fears by the time the banquet begins.
At
the completion of her fear landscape, Eric injects her with a colored serum.
When the banquet is over, she realizes what the serum was supposed to do. She
tries to find Four, but she can't find him because of the crowd in the hallway.
She thinks about telling him the next day, without realizing that there
wouldn't be a next day.
The
book has a beautiful climax, and ends in a thrilling cliffhanger. All throughout,
the reader wants to know what happens next. When I was reading it, I couldn't
wait to turn the page. Especially, the ending is nice. Although I cried a lot
while reading the book, I would recommend this book to any kid who reads a lot,
and is above twelve years of age.
